May 29, 2019

Paragon has become one of Maryland’s big success stories.

The Maryland-based company’s story begins in 1990 with Founder, Marco Chacon, PhD. They started in a local JHU incubator where they strategically leveraged the resources of the University of Maryland Scale-Up Facility to extend their production capacity to meet customer needs and expand in their early days. Later they became a core tenant of the UM BioPark and attracted capital investment from a syndicate that included local private equity firm, Camden Partners in 2014 which fueled their growth to over 150 employees. In 2018 they began expansion with a state of the art cGMP Gene Therapy Manufacturing Facility near BWI that was completed in 2019. Just day’s after the grand opening of that new facility they announced their acquisition by global CDMO Catalent for $1.2B.

Pete Buzy joined Paragon in 2014 and helped Chacon with the company’s first capital raise, including the Camden Partners investment. and became President and CEO in September 2016. Bringing with him over 25 years of successful executive management experience, Pete has grown the company into a premier CDMO with a leading position in gene therapy and next-generation vaccines.  With expertise in growing companies and increasing their value, Buzy recruited and attracted a top tier leadership team and was instrumental in leading the company to successfully achieve double-digit growth and the blockbuster acquisition by Catalent.
