Maryland Pavilion to Showcase State’s Thriving Biotech Community at Annual BIO Convention
31 Biohealth Organizations Unite Under One Pavilion to Share Maryland’s Incredible Biotech Growth Story

“It starts with one” is BIO 2019’s powerful conference theme that reflects “Scientific progress begins with one idea, one theory, one trial, one success. …can have a global impact on tomorrow,” and can “bring new breakthroughs to the world.”
The Maryland biotech industry is certainly taking this theme to heart.
Dozens of Maryland companies, vendors and government agencies have joined forces to showcase the state’s rapidly expanding biotech industry at the Maryland Pavilion at BIO 2019, which will be held next week in Philadelphia.
“For Maryland, it’s about continuing our momentum,” shared Maryland Commerce Secretary Kelly M. Schulz. “Maryland has the nations leading research, academic, workforce and federal government infrastructure to be the premier life science ecosystem in the U.S. and beyond, and Bio 2019 provides us the platform to communicate this message worldwide.”
The Maryland Pavilion provides a tremendous opportunity to tell the state’s compelling biotech growth story to a large, global audience. BIO 2019 anticipates some 16,000 plus biotech and pharma industry leaders and 7,000 plus companies at this year’s convention.
Last year at BIO 2018 the Maryland delegation shared a host of success stories confirming the state’s continued rise as one of the globe’s leading biotech ecosystems. The momentum has only continued to grow in 2019. Recent news of the first regulatory approval based on REGENEXBIO’s NAV Technology for Novartis’s prospective gene therapy blockbuster drug Zolgensma, Kite Pharma’s plans to build a manufacturing site in Frederick County, Maryland, the recent acquisition of Paragon Bioservices for $1.2B by Catalent, NextCure’s recent IPO, and Viela Bio’s rapid clinical progress and advancement towards commercialization are just the latest examples of Maryland biopharma success stories.
One storyline that will surely be buzzing around the Maryland pavilion this year at BIO is the emergence of Maryland as a gene and cell therapy hub. With Autolus opening their US HQ and Manufacturing in Rockville, Kite Pharma’s presence, REGENXBIO’s recent commercial promise and Paragon’s rapid growth there is a strong foundation being built. In addition, earlier stage companies like Immunomic Therapeutics, American Gene Technologies and Arcellix who recently raised $26M are signs of a strong gene and cell therapy ecosystem being built here in Maryland. The proximity to NCI and collaborations with Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland and Children’s National are also very attractive to companies in this space.
The promise and power of the state’s unique biotech industry will be on full display in the Maryland Pavilion with over 31 organizations exhibiting at booths 3427 and 3627. Innovative life science companies, economic development entities, incubators, state agencies, vendors, CROs, federal government agencies, research universities and real estate developers will be on hand to represent the state at the center of one of the world’s strongest biotech clusters.
